Ok-true facts. It’s not really 5am. But it was before 5:30. Mom likes to ease into these ideas.
She always used to get up at 5am and write. It’s how she finished Downward Sizing Dog.
And now, she’s having a ruff (see what we did there 😬) time balancing writing book two while blogging and teaching and marketing. So maybe she’s going back to the 5am thing. We tried it this morning and we liked it.

TWO EASY STEPS TO BOOST YOUR SMALL DOG`S IMMUNE SYSTEM BEFORE ANNUAL VACCINES
So much is written about what to do during or after our dogs’ annual vaccination appointments. Yet, veterinary health writers all but ignore what we can do to boost our small dogs’ immune health BEFORE we load their little bodies with foreign substances. This oversight missed my notice until last year, when my sister Amy asked me how she could boost her pup’s immune system before her rabies shot.
Amy’s little Havana Silk Dog, Chloe, is in perfect health. (Chloe is pictured above, with my mom). She eats a raw, freeze-dried diet, enjoys lively daily exercise, and is full of exuberant personality. However, my sister knew from our experience with Scout and her adverse vaccine reaction, that even pups in top health can stumble when we flood their systems with vaccine virus and its accompanying preservatives.
When she asked what she should do, I assumed it would be easy to research the answer.
But it wasn’t.
Plenty of advice exists regarding what to do during and after vaccine appointments. Very few reputable resources talked about preparing our pups’ systems for the onslaught of virus and chemicals flooding their systems when they receive their shots.
Yet, when our pups are about to undergo any stressful event, it’s wise to consider boosting their immune system. My day jobs have always been ones that involved nearly constant interaction with others. My first fifteen career years were spent practicing law. Then, I moved into teaching high school students, where I’ve been for the past 25 years. Every day, I interact with hundreds of kids and dozens of adults.
And for most of my life, I couldn’t figure out why I felt so over-wired much of the time. And why, whenever free time presented itself (she didn’t come around often), I’d choose just to be outside, watching nature in the company of my dogs.
Several years ago, a friend said to me “you know you’re really an introvert, right?” I laughed. Me? I loved the energy of teaching and the reward in helping people through their legal issues. But when I looked deeply? He was right. I might love both these things, but they drained me thoroughly.
For a while, I thought my “extroverted introvertedness” held me back. It made me “outside the norm” and not in a good way.
But the thing is, being outside the norm is where things truly get accomplished.
When I stopped assuming I HAD to live up my extroverted reputation and gave myself permission to nourish the silence-seeking, animal-loving part of me, I made space to get some important things done.
So here’s to accepting AND appreciating all the things that make us different 👏 I’d love to know what differences you carry around with you - how have they made you better or stronger or helped you create things you wouldn’t otherwise?
